Hurricane Prep - Shutter System Maintenance

Lake Worth, FL (September 24, 2024) - With the fall storm season well on its way, it’s time to make sure the protection already put in place on homes or businesses is ready for the challenges that lie ahead. Eastern Metal Supply (EMS), the largest hurricane protection supplier in the Southeast, provides competitive pricing, high-quality products, and unmatched customer service. Part of that customer service is ensuring consumers know how to care for their storm shutters. Shutter products, like EMS’s Bertha™ Accordion or Roll Shutter Systems, require regular cleaning, maintenance, and lubrication. EMS recommends enrolling in a service contract for professional routine maintenance to ensure all components are working properly when needed.
When cleaning shutters, harsh chemicals, detergents, or cleaners such as chlorin or bleach should be avoided, as they could affect the surface appearance and operation. Do not use a high-pressure spray, as extreme pressure could crack or destroy caulking or remove paint. Also, avoid using oil-based lubricants, such as WD-40, which contains water. For accordion shutters, open the shutter and wash all blades and tracks with soapy water and rinse clean. Top tracks, rollers and locking systems should be lubricated with a dry silicone spray. For roll shutter systems, lower the shutter into the down position, and wash the curtain, tracks and box with soapy water, rinse with clean water. This should bed one twice yearly, or more often in coastal or high corrosion (salt) areas. Moving parts of the shutters should be lubricated with a dry silicone spray. For Bahama & Colonial shutters, the shutter and any tracks and arms should be washed with soapy water and rinsed with clean water twice yearly. Threaded areas on bolts, hinges, and fasteners should be lubricated with a dry silicone spray.
